Northern Thailand is well situated because of its location in the foothills of the Himalayas,. It is home to many fertile valleys and numerous beautiful streams.
The nation once known as ‘Lan-na’ has stunning mountain jungle landscapes that you’ll never forget. The Golden Triangle borders on Burma to the north-west/west, with Laos in the north-east/east and Siam in the central south.
The first major unrest was brought about the by the accession of King Mengrai, but today he’s a popular historical figure. The Thai people founded both Chiang Rai and Phrao in 1262 and 1284 respectively. In the year of 1292 King Mengrai used these towns to prepare for a crusade against the Mon, whose kingdom of Hariphunchai he later annexed. In the year 1296 the king established Chiang Mai as the capital of his Kingdom.
The next couple of centuries were a period of unrest. The lords of Burma often conquered land only to lose it later to the kings of Siam.
At the beginning of the 20th century the ‘land of a million rice fields’ or ‘Lan-Na’ was finally integrated into Siam (the northern part of Thailand).
Northern Thailand today consists of the following provinces; Lampang, Lampuhn, Chiang mai, Chiang Rai and and Mae Hong son.
